A man has has died after his attempts to flee security outside Volbeat's Lubbock, Texas, performance ended with him falling to his death in a restricted area near the venue.

Local station KCBD reports that Jubal Colvin, 39, of Abilene, Texas, was attempting to get in to the Lonestar Event Center by jumping a fence. When he was noticed by private security attempting to sneak into the venue after apparently being stopped earlier for having a knife on him, a chase followed in which Colvin ducked into a restricted area that had been fenced off.

Police say in his attempt to get away, Colvin fell approximately 20 feet from the hillside and struck his head on the concrete below. First responders reportedly gave Colvin CPR at the scene of the incident, but he later died at the local hospital.

Lubbock radio station KFMX was promoting the Volbeat concert, and the station stated in a posting after the event, "We had a death at the concert on Monday night (March 11) and it really didn't have to happen. I have the story from security, the police and an individual who witnessed the whole ordeal. Their stories match up exactly … Here is what I can tell you about the incident. An individual who appeared to be drunk or had been drinking was stopped at security for having a knife. At some point, he got agitated and threw the knife at security and started running. He was told to stop several times by security and police. He ran past several fences and barricades before either running off the roof or attempting to jump roof to roof."

KFMX reports that the events were witnessed by several people, including backstage bystanders like new Volbeat guitarist Rob Caggiano. Read KFMX's full account here, and watch a TV report from KCBD below:
