On Saturday February 18th I embarked out on what I thought was going to be a great day in the Walla Walla Valley. What I didn’t expect was to be exhausted and spent from an all day party through downtown Walla Walla. I learned a lot of things and one of them is, I’m not as young as I used to be. With that being said I had a ton of fun and will be ready to go for the 2013 edition of Walla Crawl.

Walla Crawl 2012 was a first year event that was half party and half fundraiser. Proceeds from the event went to the Walla Walla Fire Department Benevolence Fund and even though 500+ party goers had a good time they also helped raise over $2500 for a local charity.

Thanks to The Marcus Whitman Hotel who allowed me to fight my pounding headache all night long in a very comfortable bed and special thanks to The Stone Hut Bar & Grill which we’ve dubbed the best place to cure a Walla Crawl hangover!

The skiers were equipted with safety equiptment but mother nature won the battle. Sadly Jim Jack, Chris Rudolph and Johnny Brenan all died in the avalanche.

41 year old Karl Milanoski was also killed Sunday near Alpental when he was swept off of a cliff by another avalanche.

To all of my friends, family and listeners who ski and ride, Please stay in bounds. The experts say most avalanches happen after big storms like the ones we had this weekend, and even if you are an expert skier/boarder you are no match against mother nature. Shred, Have fun this winter but be safe.

Throughout all of history music has been there to tell stories. It has told takes of war, love and heartbreak. We aren’t looking at that boring stuff though. We want to take a look at some of the most bad ass fictional characters in music.

We have spanned genres and time to come up with 10 characters that you may like to hear sung about, but wouldn’t want to be caught alone with in a dark alley.

10. Big Jack

When it comes to AC/DC, they are all about the party. ‘Big Jack’ is a song about a guy who likes to party hard, and fight even harder. Basically, you don’t want to mess with Big Jack, but if you’re on his good side, he’ll totally get your back.

9. Quinn The Eskimo

‘You’ve not seen nothing like the Mighty Quinn.’ Written by Bob Dylan, and made famous by the boys in Manfred Mann, some say it was based on a nursery rhyme and others an iconic role played by Anthony Quinn. Either way Quinn is one kick butt Eskimo.

8. Superbeast

Rob Zombie is big into monsters and other scary things, and while we aren’t exactly sure what the ‘Superbeast’ is, we know that it’s something that you don’t want to be on the wrong side of. if it’s anything like the music video suggests, than it’s a hot motorcycle riding chick who uses swords to kick some ass.

7. Tom Sawyer

It’s Rush’s iconic anthem to Mark Twain’s character of the same name. Tom Sawyer is basically about a guy who won’t bend to society’s wants and needs and does what he wants. A nonconformist if you will. Neil Pert describes him has modern day rebel with a purpose. Sounds good to us.

6. Johnny

An epic battle between man and the devil in ‘The Devil Went Down to Georgia.’ You can’t help but love once Johnny brings the devil down to his knees. Hands down the most bad ass song to ever feature a fiddle.

5. Slim Shady

Marshall Mathers is real and Slim Shady is a persona but we just aren’t sure where one begins and the other ends. Sure Eminem is a person, but when he is writing his songs it’s a total character, and amplified version of himself. So basically, we wouldn’t want to be alone with Eminem, Marshall Mathers, Slim Shady, or whatever character he cooks up in his mind.

4. Joe

Hey, Joe. What’s with the gun? Bottom line, don’t cheat with Joe’s wife because he will kill you and her. One of Jimi Hendrixs‘ best songs. You think that maybe the guy in the song may talk him out of it, but no, Joe is one determined man.

3. Leroy Brown

A warning tale from Jim Croce. If you ever happen to be in or around Chicago, watch out for Leroy Brown. Basically Leroy is a bully, but when it came down to it, a man defending his lady was able to beat ole’ Leroy. Kuddos for sticking up for your lady mystery jealous guy.

2. Sue

There is only a couple reasons that you would name your son Sue. You either really want to humiliate him for life, or make him tough. The Sue we all know from the Johnny Cash song ‘A Boy Named Sue’ (written by Shel Silverstein — yes, THAT Shel Silverstein) grew up fast and tough. The guy even fights his dad in the song. We are happy to report that the two of them are still getting along, despite being named Sue.

1. Iron Man

If you actually listen to the lyrics, this is a very tragic song. Turns out though, if people had only listened to Iron Man by Black Sabbath, he wouldn’t have destroyed the planet. Since he basically caused the apocalypse, he is hands down the most bad ass character in all of music.

With Oscars season upon us, it’s anyone’s guess who will take home the gold. Each year, some newcomers crash the party among veteran actors who command the red carpet at the Academy Awards. The annual event draws Hollywood’s biggest stars, and millions more around the world. The press always puts together some basic information about this year’s nominees, but how much do you actually know about the Oscars ceremony? Here’s a list of fun facts and trivia you can use to impress your friends this awards season.

Why’s it called Oscar?

Nobody knows for sure. The most commonly cited origin dates back to actress Bette Davis, who said that the backside of the statuette looked like her first husband, Harmon Oscar Nelson. According to another theory, the name came from Academy secretary Margaret Herrick who claimed it looked like her Uncle Oscar. However it came to be, the Oscar officially got its name in 1939, 10 years after the annual ceremony began. The official name of the Oscar is the Academy Award of Merit.

What are the statues made of?

Originally, they were gold-plated solid bronze. Then they moved over to Britannia metal, a pewter-like alloy that was then covered with copper, nickel silver, and 24-carat gold. But when WWII hit, and a metal shortage followed, the Academy had to make do with what materials they had available. So they resorted to painted plaster for three years. After the war ended, recipients were invited to exchange the plaster awards for gold-plated metal ones. Fun fact: Oscar statuette weighs 8 1/2 pounds and is 13 1/2 inches tall. (Watch a video on the making of an Oscar below.)

Hardly anyone attended the first Academy Awards

With what the awards have turned into today, it’s hard to imagine Hollywood’s humble beginnings. But that was the case for the first Academy Awards in May 1929, which was a small dinner held at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel for 270 guests. It cost $5 a head, and the guests dined on broiled chicken.

There have only been a few sweeps of the top categories

‘Hugo’ leads this year’s Best Picture crop with 11 nominations, but only three films in the history of the awards have ever won all five of the top categories (Best Picture, Actor in a Leading Role, Actress in a Leading Role, Directing, Writing). They are: ‘It Happened One Night’ (1934), ’One Flew over the Cuckoo’s Nest’ (1975) and ‘Silence of the Lambs’ (1991). 37 other films have been nominated in all of the “Big Five” categories, but have fallen short of ultimate Oscars glory.

A sound mixer is the biggest loser in Oscars history

Sound mixer Kevin O’Connell has 20 nominations yet still no wins, making him “the unluckiest nominee in the history of the Academy Awards,” according to The Guardian. Basically O’Connell is the Susan Lucci of the Oscars, with nods spanning from ‘Terms of Endearment’ to ’Transformers.’ “If I ever did get an opportunity to make a speech, one of the things I’d say is to all you nominees, don’t consider yourselves losers. You guys are winners and don’t let anyone tell you differently,” he told Entertainment Weekly. O’Connell can take solace in his recognition from the Academy in other ways — he sits on the Board of Governors, representing the sound branch. (Watch an interview with O’Connell below.)

A toothbrush is Billy Crystal’s good luck charm

Expect this year’s host Billy Crystal to be armed with a toothbrush in his tuxedo pocket, but not because of a fear of bad breath. As a kid, Crystal would pretend to make an Oscar speech using his toothbrush as a microphone, and each of the eight times he’s taken the stage as the show’s host, he’s brought along his toothbrush to help ease his nerves.

Selling Oscar trophies is forbidden

Fame is fleeting, and so are Oscars apparently. Many celebrities have given their Oscars way or lost them over the years. But according to Moviefone, they can’t hock them at the pawn shop — the Academy banned the sale of the statuettes in 1950. Heirs to the statuettes must, according to the established rule, sell the trophies back to the Academy for $1. Pre-1950 Academy Awards have sold for millions.

Jemal Countess, Getty Images

Someone streaked the Oscars

During the 1974 Academy Awards, while actor David Niven was calling up Elizabeth Taylor to present the Oscar for Best Picture, a streaker emerged from the back of the stage and interrupted the festivities. Niven ad-libbed, ”Well, ladies and gentlemen, that was almost bound to happen. But isn’t it fascinating to think that probably the only laugh that man will ever get in his life is by stripping off and showing his shortcomings?” The streaker was Robert Opel, a photographer and art gallery owner who had snuck backstage posing as a journalist. You can thank him for the delay imposed on the televised broadcast. Watch the famous moment below.

Marlon Brando turned down an award

When Marlon Brando won Best Actor in a Leading Role for ‘The Godfather’ in 1972, he declined to accept the award and instead sent Native American actress Sacheen Littlefeather to represent him on the stage. Littlefeather explained that Brando didn’t appreciate the way that Native Americans were portrayed in the movies. While some didn’t like Brando’s political statement, others believe that Brando’s stand helped improve the treatment of Native Americans in Hollywood. The Academy subsequently banned the use of proxies to speak on anyone’s behalf at the ceremony.

Oscar wins raise the divorce rate

A recent study found that women who were nominated for Best Actress were more likely to get divorced sometime after their Academy Award nods. Many recent winners – including Kate Winslet, Reese Witherspoon, and Sandra Bullock – feel prey to the curse. (See a recent list of actresses here.) “Winning an Oscar can be construed as a big jump in professional status that an actor or actress has in their world and in the eyes of the broader audience…You are never the same after you’ve secured an Oscar for Best actor or Best Actress,” explained one of the scientists.

Well I thought I had seen it all when it comes to sports well now I can officially say I have. The new sport is called Ultimate Tazer Ball or UTB for short. Players use a 300,000-volt stun gun to try and stop their opponents from tossing a large foam ball into a netted goal. Only the player who has the ball can be tazed…whew thank god for rules! So far there are only 4 professional teams: “The LA Nightlight” “Philadelphia Killawatts” “Toronto Terror” and “San Diego Spartans” I think this could actually catch on. Anyone down for a game of UTB?

Slash made a guest appearance performing alongside Lenny Kravitz at the ‘Power of Love Gala’ — a tribute to legendary boxing champion Muhammad Ali held Feb. 18 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.

Slash was recently lampooned in an episode of ‘South Park’ as a fictional character who is portrayed by several different people, much like a mall Santa Claus. Though Slash is indeed a real person, the gag poked fun at the fact that sometimes it seems like Slash is everywhere.

The former Guns N’ Roses axeman’s most recent appearance was at a ceremony to honor boxing legend Muhammad Ali. “Muhammad Ali is and always has been a role model & a hero to me,” said Slash. “It’s a huge privilege to be able to perform in his honor. He is one of the great icons of American culture and history.” Slash took the stage with Lenny Kravitz to pay tribute to Ali with a performance of ‘Always on the Run’ — a track the pair wrote together for Kravitz’ 1991 album ‘Mama Said.’

The ‘Power of Love Gala’ celbrated the 70th birthday of Muhammad Ali with all proceeds from the event being donated to the Cleveland Clinic Lou Ruvo Center for Brain Health and the Muhammad Ali Center in Louisville, Kentucky. Others in attendance at the event included Chris Cornell, Stevie Wonder, Sean Combs, Snoop Dogg, former President Bill Clinton, Sir Anthony Hopkins, Oprah Winfrey, fellow boxing legend Sugar Ray Leonard, and more.

Another high-profile appearance Slash is expected to make will be at Guns N’ Roses Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony April 14. Despite current GN’R keyboardist Dizzy Reed’s recent claim that the band’s original lineup will be in attendance, Slash isn’t so sure. “I know that there’s a lot of rumor about it, as always when it comes to GN’R, out there on the Internet and stuff,” said Slash in an interview with the radio station DC101. “But as it stands right this second, I have no idea what’s going on.”

Slash’s new album featuring Myles Kennedy and The Conspirators is titled ‘Apocalyptic Love‘ is set for release May 22 and is the follow-up to his critically acclaimed solo debut ‘Slash.’

This made the funnyman an easy choice to lead the annual Krewe of Bacchus parade Sunday. And, of course, he dressed up like a king.

The Krewe of Bacchus is one of the superkrewes celebrations that take place during the run up to Madri Gras’ Fat Tuesday events. Bacchus, which is named for the Roman god of wine, was the first krewe to feature a celebrity king. Previous Bacchus monarchs include Drew Bress, Jackie Gleason, Bob Hope and Val Kilmer.

Given Ferrell’s propensity for showing skin in movies like ‘Old School’ and ‘Talladega Nights,’ one may have expected the 44-year-old to shed his top during his Bacchus reign. Thankfully, he didn’t. Maybe because, as king, he was the one handing out the beads.

UK power metal band DragonForce are offering a preview of their upcoming ‘The Power Within’ with a full stream of the new song ‘Fallen World.’

In addition, the song offers fans the band’s first tune with vocalist Marc Hudson, who was announced as the group’s new singer a year ago. He replaced departed frontman ZP Theart, who parted ways with DragonForce in 2010.

‘Fallen World’ captures the signature DragonForce sound with its fast-paced guitars and melodic chorus. Guitarist Herman Li states, “This time around we’ve really brought our metal side to the surface and made some of the best music of our career. From the fastest song we’ve ever recorded ['Fallen World'] to the slower songs, and some things you would never expect from us, this is by far the most diverse DragonForce album yet.”

The new DragonForce album ‘The Power Within’ is scheduled to drop April 17.

The Melvins will release a brand new studio album with the delightful title ‘Freak Puke’ on June 5 via Ipecac Recordings.

Nothing ever stays entirely in one place very long around the Melvins, and the constantly evolving underground hard rock geniuses have undergone a temporary lineup and name change for the recording of ‘Freak Puke.’

While their last three albums featured a two-drummer, four-piece roster augmented by Big Business members Jared Warren and Coady Willis, the new record finds the group in a more familiar three-piece setting.

Founding guitarist / singer Buzz Osbourne and his longtime drumming partner Dale Crover will be joined by bassist Trevor Dunn for this record, and the trio will operate under the name Melvins Lite.

It will be the four-piece version of the Melvins that embarks on their upcoming spring co-headlining tour with Unsane. The trek kicks off April 11 in San Jose, Calif. and runs through May 11 in Santa Anna, Calif. You can get all the tour dates here.

The Melvins Lite lineup is in addition to, not replacing, the four-piece version of the band. As usual over the years, if you’re looking for hard information on the group, the very last place on earth you should visit is the band’s admittedly awesome official website.

Machine Head frontman Robb Flynn and bassist Adam Duce recently gave some students a thrill when they stopped by Booker T. Washington High School in Tulsa, Okla., on Feb. 13 and spoke to students in a music class for an hour.

Duce was invited by the school’s music teacher, with whom he’s friends, at the request of a student — but the surprise came when Flynn joined him for the visit. That student posted a YouTube video of the entire visit (watch below), as well as the following message:

“They came to visit our school, Booker T. Washington High School, because our guitar teacher knew Adam Duce and I asked him to see if he could get at least Adam Duce to come to hang out. I could never believe that Robb Flynn would drop by with him as well! They played later on that night at the House of Blues on February 13, 2012, and I headbanged and moshed like none before at the concert!”

Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl‘s acceptance speech at last Sunday’s Grammy Awards stirred up a lot of reaction — both positive and negative — when he seemed to deride electronic music in favor of using real instruments. However, in a new open letter, Grohl clarifies his speech by saying he is a fan of electronic music and that his words were misinterpreted.

To get the explanation straight from Grohl himself, read his full statement below:

Oh, what a night we had last Sunday at the 54th Annual Grammy Awards. The glitz! The Glamour! SEACREST! Where do I begin?? Chillin’ with Lil’ Wayne…meeting Cyndi Lauper’s adorable mother…the complimentary blinking Coldplay bracelet…..much too much to recap. It’s really is still a bit of a blur. But, if there’s one thing that I remember VERY clearly, it was accepting the Grammy for Best Rock Performance…and then saying this:

“To me this award means a lot because it shows that the human element of music is what’s important. Singing into a microphone and learning to play an instrument and learning to do your craft, that’s the most important thing for people to do… It’s not about being perfect, it’s not about sounding absolutely correct, it’s not about what goes on in a computer. It’s about what goes on in here [your heart] and what goes on in here [your head].”

Not the Gettysburg Address, but hey……I’m a drummer, remember?

Well, me and my big mouth. Never has a 33 second acceptance rant evoked such caps-lock postboard rage as my lil’ ode to analog recording has. OK….maybe Kanye has me on this one, but….Imma let you finish….just wanted to clarify something…

I love music. I love ALL kinds of music. From Kyuss to Kraftwerk, Pinetop Perkins to Prodigy, Dead Kennedys to Deadmau5…..I love music. Electronic or acoustic, it doesn’t matter to me. The simple act of creating music is a beautiful gift that ALL human beings are blessed with. And the diversity of one musician’s personality to the next is what makes music so exciting and…..human.

That’s exactly what I was referring to. The “human element”. That thing that happens when a song speeds up slightly, or a vocal goes a little sharp. That thing that makes people sound like PEOPLE. Somewhere along the line those things became “bad” things, and with the great advances in digital recording technology over the years they became easily “fixed”. The end result? I my humble opinion…..a lot of music that sounds perfect, but lacks personality. The one thing that makes music so exciting in the first place.

And, unfortunately, some of these great advances have taken the focus off of the actual craft of performance. Look, I am not Yngwie Malmsteen. I am not John Bonham. Hell…I’m not even Josh Groban, for that matter. But I try really fucking hard so that I don’t have to rely on anything but my hands and my heart to play a song. I do the best that I possibly can within my limitations, and accept that it sounds like me. Because that’s what I think is most important. It should be real, right? Everybody wants something real.

I don’t know how to do what Skrillex does (though I fucking love it) but I do know that the reason he is so loved is because he sounds like Skrillex, and that’s badass. We have a different process and a different set of tools, but the “craft” is equally as important, I’m sure. I mean…..if it were that easy, anyone could do it, right? (See what I did there?)

So, don’t give me two Crown Royals and then ask me to make a speech at your wedding, because I might just bust into the advantages of recording to 2 inch tape.

Now, I think I have to go scream at some kids to get off my lawn.

Stay frosty.

Davemau5

Grohl signed the letter Davemau5 in a nod to Deadmau5, with whom he performed a tribute to dance and electronica music during the Grammy ceremony.

Foo Fighters were among the big winners at the Grammys, taking home five awards on the night.

At first listen of August Burns Red, and other bands with screaming/growling/guttural vocals, you will either get with it or be against it. That seems to be the nature of the beast with Metal and all the ‘core’ genres that have spawned over the years. So with that being said, I present to you August Burns Red… hate it or love it, this sh*t rocks!

I’m not positive when the first time I saw these guys live was, it was either 2008 or 2009 Warped Tour. That was the first time I had heard them and to be blunt, they were badass. Killer stage presence and just a brutal sound. I only caught the last song or two of theirs before the set ended.

I was able to catch them again in 2010 at The Roseland Theater in Portland with A Day To Remember and Silverstein. This was the moment that I became a real fan of ABR. Their new album ‘Constellations’ had just been released and to this day is one of my all time favorite albums.

Check out the tracks “Marianas Trench”, “White Washed”, and my personal favorite “Meridian” all from the ‘Constellations’ album.

They released their new album ‘Leveler’ last year just a few weeks before their 2011 Warped Tour show at The Gorge. Another killer show. They are currently out on tour with I, The Breather, Texas In July, and Silverstein and I was able to catch them at their stop in Portland last Friday at the Hawthorne Theater. This has got to be the first time I’ve seen anyone do this…a chicken fight in the pit? Yea…that just happened.

Metal heavyweights Five Finger Death Punch bring a cinematic narrative to their latest video for the uncharacteristically heartfelt single ‘Remember Everything.’

The days of big-budget music videos that play like short films may be behind us, but Five Finger Death Punch have decided to revive the lost art of storytelling in their latest clip for ‘Remember Everything.’ “We’re tired of band videos where all you see is musicians playing in some random church or out in a desert,” frontman Ivan Moody explained to USA Today. “We thought this song deserved something with more taste and passion to it.”

The band’s latest single trades the aggressive drive of past singles like ‘Under and Over It,’ to deliver a deeper autobiographical message about emotional neglect. “There were patterns in my family that had to be broken, and I refused to live my life the way certain members of my family had” said Moody of the lyrical inspiration behind the tune.

The heavy message is put on full display in the video that shows how emotional abuse manifests from childhood to adulthood. When the lyrics are paired with the imagery in the video, it adds a heart-breaking new angle to the experience. Although there are no instruments featured in the video, all the band members do make brief cameos throughout.

‘Remember Everything’ can be found on the band’s third album, ‘American Capitalist,’ which has already sold over 300,000 copies since it’s fall 2011 release. Five Finger Death Punch will embark on a 2012 North American tour with Soulfly, Windowpane and Persist this March.
