Several dozen Boy Scouts and their parents tromped up and down the lanes of Richland's Sunset Memorial Gardens this morning planting tall flags next to the graves of men and women who served our country in the military.
Every flag had a name on a placard, as a volunteer read the name on the grave, the boy with that flag planted it in the ground. The result is a cemetery with about 1,000 flags flying to mark today's holiday.
If you have a chance, drive to Sunset Memorial Gardens through Richland, not around it on Vantage Road. The extra few minutes will be rewarded by the view of plaques and flags on most street corners recognizing the soldiers for whom most Richland streets are named. My own residence is on Farrell Lane -- recognizing the sacrifice of an Army vet who gave his life in World War II.

If you're not able to make it to Richland, most Kennewick and Pasco cemeteries are holding a ceremony to honor veterans at 10 a.m. today.
