Who says MTV doesn’t play music anymore? The network’s long-running ‘Unplugged’ series begins a new season on April 9 with a performance by Florence + the Machine. The set will be released as a CD/DVD combo the next day.

The British band, whose singer, Florence Welch, was recently named the “Greatest Woman in Rock of All Time” by London’s XFM radio station, recorded the show back in December. That night, the stage of the Angel Orensanz synagogue on New York’s Lower East Side was lit with candles, which occasionally caused Welch to be overcome with emotion.

“I had to stop myself after every song,” Welch told Reuters. “I would be like, ‘Wow.’”

Backed by a 10-piece choir, Florence + the Machine performed songs from both of her albums, 2009′s ‘Lungs’ and last year’s ‘Ceremonials,’ including the hits ‘Dog Days are Over’ and ‘Shake it Out.’ She also covered the standard ‘Try a Little Tenderness,’ made famous by Otis Redding.

As is so often the case with ‘Unplugged,’ there was a special guest appearance, this time in the form of Josh Homme of Queens of the Stone Age. The pair performed the Johnny Cash and June Carter classic, ‘Jackson’
