The Ogden, Utah, chapter called police to complain about a man's Halloween decoration in the front yard. When the local newspaper reported it, readers went nuts in defense of the popular lawn ornament. What do you think?

Here are my thoughts:

  • Even though it was a white dummy and was supposed to evoke Wild West hangings of bank robbers and horse thieves, I can absolutely see why it would be highly disturbing to people of color.
  • My best friend once confessed it really, really bothered that something as morbid as a hanging man would be a fun decoration for a child-centered holiday.
  • I don't think "free speech" protections cover offensive lawn decorations. If something in your front yard bothers your neighbors you should fix it. It's just being a good neighbor.
