The state legislature approved partial funding to purchase land on Candy Mountain to make a hiking trail. Benton County must raise the remaining funds, but it looks promising.

The plan is to be able to start at Badger Mountain Trail park and hike 20 miles of trails over Badger, then up and over Candy Mountain, then over Red Mountain.

The money is to purchase the land. The Friends of Badger Mountain and other organizations will help build the trails.

The idea is so popular it was ranked No. 2 most-worthy of funding!

A representative from the Audubon Society said the trails will be an important conservation effort because it will prevent homes from being built on the mountains. With encroachment on Little Badger and the house on the hill in Kennewick, this is a real issue.
