A Pendleton woman had been decorating a statue of Jackson Sundown, a Nez Perce rodeo hero, to correspond with specific holidays. She'll now face a stiff fine for doing it again.

Many in the community loved it, including some tribal members.

But then people pointed out how insensitive and offensive it was to his descendants and Nez Perce who revere Jackson Sundown as a local hero. Then local tribal councils unanimously condemned the practice, prompting the city council to unanimously ban the decorating of any local monument.

Darn, but you can't to argue with that. It's hard to be sad when good taste prevails.

I recommend Pendleton erect a faceless statue for the sole purpose of letting people decorate it!
