I-84 remains closed between Exit 17 in Troutdale and Exit 62 in HoodRiver because of the continuing #EagleCreekFire. Motor carriers should expect I-84 in the Gorge to be closed at least through this weekend, perhaps longer.

In consultation with the U.S. Forest Service, fire authorities and law enforcement, we will re-open the road when it is safe to do so. Trees and rocks continue to fall onto the roadway, and some sections of guardrail and road signs are damaged by fire. We will assess the potential for further debris/rockfall in the coming days.

WESTBOUND truck traffic must leave I-84 at either Exit 104 (BiggsJunction, US 97) or Exit 87 (TheDalles, US 197), and use US 197, OR 216, or US 26 to bypass the closure on the trip between The Dalles and the Portland area. Keep in mind these restrictions:

OR 216: Trucks with up to 48-foot semi-trailers are allowed with no limit to overall length. If the semi-trailer is 48 feet, 1 inch, to 53 feet in length, the overall length is limited to 65 feet. Motor carriers hauling loads with truck tractor and semi-trailer combinations, with the semi-trailer longer than 48 feet, should use OR 35 between I-84 and US 26, or US 97 to US 26.

US 197 south of OR 216 is limited to 60 feet in overall length for truck tractor and semi-trailer combinations, regardless of trailer length, so this may not be a viable alternative.

EASTBOUND truck traffic can enter I-84 at Exit 64 (Hood River, OR 35), Exit 87 (The Dalles, US 197), or Exit 104 (Biggs Junction, US 97). In addition to the restrictions shown above, OR 35 is width restricted, so loads wider than 9 feet require at least a front pilot vehicle.

Message boards are being deployed to help guide motor carriers around the closure.

Oversize loads using detour routes should check for size and weight limits on their Oregon Permit Route Maps and Attachments, or by calling the Over-Dimension Permit Unit at 503-373-0000.

While passenger vehicles are being allowed on some closed roads, trucks may not be allowed because of restrictions further along the route. In Washington, all vehicles over 10,000 GVW are prohibited on eastbound SR 14 between Washougal (milepost 19) and US 197 in Dallesport (milepost 84) because of the fire. Freight haulers should plan an alternate route. There is no estimate for lifting the restrictions.

As always, find updates on road conditions by calling 511 (in state).
