It's spring, and love is in the air. Love of little baby animals who are too cute to resist. It's fun to visit farms and have the kids check out the babies this time of year, but there are some things to remember: animals can get you sick. Birds like chickens, ducks, and swans can carry salmonella on their beaks, feet, and body. And even if the chick looks clean, it can still carry the illness.

Make sure to wash your hands after handling any farm animal (babies too), and don't kiss them. It's hard to tell your little ones not to do this, but they especially are more vulnerable, as are the elderly and pregnant women. Now, don't be afraid to get to a petting zoo, they are fun and great learning for the kids, just make sure to handle with care.
