I really liked Jim Carrey's line at the Maharishi University of Management commencement in Iowa: "So many of us choose our path out of fear disguised as practicality." That line is like a light bulb moment for me. People are afraid to chase what they really want to do. I can't tell you how many times I made a choice under the guise of practicality and it took him pointing out that I was really just afraid to go after what I really wanted.

Jim Carrey's father lost his "safe" job and the family lived out of a van for a while. Jim dropped out of school at age 15 to work as a janitor and help support the family. With his father's encouragement he developed a stand up act. If not for that encouragement, he likely would have ended up working at a steel mill. Now Carrey is passing on that same encouragement to others.

He said decisions made in the moment are made out of love or fear. He told the graduates to dare to choose love. "I'm standing here to tell you, I'm the proof that you can ask the universe for it."

He said his father could have been a great comedian but he couldn't believe that was possible for him. So he made a conservative choice to take a safe job as an accountant, and that failed. "You can fail at what you don't want to do, so you might as well take a chance at what you love."

Great advice.
