Scary! When WA Hikers Should Beware of Bear ‘Eat-a-Thon’
The temperatures are getting colder.
Animals of every kind are preparing for winter. Not unlike us humans doing all we can to prepare for the long months ahead when predictions of a cold wet winter prevail and make everything a little more difficult.
Wildlife such as bears are getting ready to hibernate for winter, which means that now is the time they are on a non-stop eating frenzy to get as many calories as possible before winter hits.
This time for bears is called hyperphagia.
During this time, they do not eat or drink anything. Their body temperature and pulse will drop significantly to conserve energy, and they will live off their fat stores. To successfully do this, they must pile on as much fat as they can during the summer and fall months.
Hikers and outdoor enthusiasts should watch carefully while recreating in the mountain areas and be aware of bears and other wildlife.
It's also hunting season which gives outdoor enthusiasts another thing to watch out for.
Hunters can sometimes be overly excited and shoot at a mistaken target. Be sure to wear Orange over your outfits to ensure you can be clearly seen by hunters.
Hunting season in Washington State generally happens August- March
Whether you are skiing, hiking, or just enjoying the outdoors. Be aware of the dangers of hungry wildlife!
