Why Washingtonians Should Make Dancing a New Years Resolution
When was the last time you danced?
I remember some of the best times of my life were dancing!
Whether I was dancing a choreographed Pom Pom routine as a Cheerleader or the Country Swing with some cute guy at a dive bar, I always have loved to dance.
I actually won a dance competition once called “Dancing with the Tri-Cities Stars” My partner and I performed a Salsa dance routine. It was so much fun and we raised a lot of money for my favorite charity.
I think If I could say there is one thing missing from my life right now it would be dancing! I just don't do it anymore really.
Dancing just makes you feel good! I’m such an expressive person and I love music!
I love playing my guitar and singing and I love to dance!. Even a slow dance feels good to me if it’s with a handsome bloak! Haha! I don’t usually say bloak…but that just came out!
My point is, I think for myself I am a happier person if I get out and dance. And let's face it. Dancing is great exercise. It's exercise that doesn't feel like exercise. Right? And, isn't that the best kind?!
I think my New Year's resolution list this year will be to make dancing part of my life again—that and YOGA.
Whether it’s taking a Line dancing class or just going to a venue where they have live music that I can dance to or Heck, maybe I’ll take a Ballroom dancing class!
I’ve taken Salsa Classes before which I loved. So maybe that would be good to do again.
I felt compelled to talk about dancing because with winter here, it's good to be able to move and exercise while having some fun Indoors!
I thought I’d do a bit of research and find out the health benefits of dancing. This is what I found:
Dancing is much more than just a fun activity. It’s a powerful tool for enhancing both physical and mental well-being, offering numerous benefits for people of all ages and abilities.
Let’s explore how dancing can boost your life.
Physically, dancing is a fantastic form of exercise. It improves cardiovascular health by increasing heart rate, strengthening muscles, and enhancing flexibility.
Whether you're doing a high-energy salsa or a graceful ballet, each step helps build coordination and balance.
Dancing helps with weight management.
Dancing can burn calories while toning the body. It’s a great full-body workout that doesn’t feel like exercise!
Mentally, dancing is a powerful stress reliever.
The music and rhythm allow you to forget your worries and focus entirely on the movements, offering a break from daily stresses.
Dancing boosts the production of endorphins, those natural mood elevators, and can even alleviate symptoms of anxiety and depression.
Social dancing, in particular, fosters a sense of community and connection, which is important for mental health.
Dancing also sharpens cognitive functions.
It improves memory, concentration, and problem-solving skills. Learning new steps and routines keeps the brain active, helping to delay cognitive decline as we age.
I hear there are a few places around town that offer dancing for entertainment and also places that offer dance classes.
Here are a few to consider:
