I would like to think that I am something of an entrepreneur.

I co-owned a comedy club for a couple of years, as well as a small entertainment business for 10+ years.

I have a series of books planned out, and I have some ideas on the back burner of my brain for other start-up businesses.

But it turns out Washington might not be the best place for me or other hopeful entrepreneurs!

That’s hard to believe when you look at such giant companies that got their start in Washington.

Costco, Amazon, Boeing, Microsoft, Starbucks, UPS and the list goes on and on.

According to a new study from digital marketing site DesignRush, Washington ranks among the worst states in the country for entrepreneurial success.

Number 8 in the country. Not something to be proud of, but at least we’re not Virginia, Maryland or Iowa.

With data from the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics, DesignRush was able to track established businesses in a year span and rank which states had the slowest and fewest in new companies and business growth.

In the research, they also noted the best state for success with a new business.

A title that Oregon can lay claim on. Between September of 2022 and September of 2023, Oregon had roughly 18,273 new businesses get on their feet.

While it’s not impossible to start a business in any state, the study shows that there is growth in every state; just Oregon grew much more prominent during the studied year.

Cash Is King With Small Businesses!

A couple of things to remember (coming from my time as an entrepreneur): when possible, buy local and pay cash.

With cash, 100% goes back to the business without little fees here and there, cutting the cost for that business.
