Like a lot of people, 2020 was the year we got a dog. I guess you could call it our “COVID dog”, but we had been lightly searching for a doggie companion for a while, we just had not followed through.

Our search began at pet adoption organizations around the region. We spent hours filling out application forms, background checks, and answering questionnaires. Some organizations even stated we may never get an answer. In other words, if we didn’t hear back from the adoption group, we were to just assume they got our paperwork and declined us.

I know they do all the background checking for a reason, they want quality owners, and owning a dog is a huge responsibility, but to be honest, we started to feel unworthy, so we started looking at other sources to find our idea of the ultimate dog. Just for the heck of it, my wife decided to look on Craigslist and she ran across an ad that read, “Decker Terrier puppies coming soon, put your deposit down now”. We were both intrigued because we had never heard of a Decker Terrier.

We spent significant time doing some research on the breed and discovered the breed was everything we were looking for. We wanted a smart dog with a good temperament that was great with adults and kids, was playful, not too big or small, agile, and would come with limited grooming requirements- and the more research we did, the more our excitement built. They do have some negatives, very high-energy, a little stubborn, and they like to dig (I love my lawn), but we decided we could manage that.

We scheduled a meet and greet with the parents, and within a couple of minutes, we knew it was the breed for us – we just felt it. So, we put a deposit down for a pup, and two months later little Demi the Decker was born on December 10, 2020.

Demi is now 7-months old and is living up to her Decker Terrier bloodline. She absolutely loves people, walking, hunting prey, long walks, catching Frisbees (yes, I said catching), and even settles down for quiet time overnight. One thing we notice is how many people have not heard of the breed. People just flat out stop us on our walks and ask, “What kind of dog is that?” Or, they compliment her on looks and friendliness.

So, if you’re looking for a dog, and you enjoy a lively medium-sized doggie, you will love this breed. They have absolutely stunning markings, and as you can see from the photos, they’re all EARS! Check out the video of Demi catching the frisbee (her favorite toy). She loves to jump through hoops too, and she'll lick you to death if you lay down flat on the ground.
