America’s Long National Prohibition of Marijuana is Almost Over

While the majority of people interested in politics are mostly following the unfolding testimony and proceedings leading to the potential impeachment of President Trump, some pretty big news was made elsewhere on Capitol Hill as a congressional committee approved a piece of legislation to end marijuana prohibition in the United States.

The bill would decriminalize marijuana at the federal level. The Marijuana Opportunity, Reinvestment, and Expungement Act, better known as The MORE Act (HR 3884), would remove marijuana from the Controlled Substances Act and impose a minor excise tax on the legal cannabis industry to pay for the expunging of criminal records, among other changes. This applies retroactively to prior and pending convictions

It passed on a bipartisan vote of 24 to 10. It now heads to the full House. If the bill makes it out, its future is far less certain in the GOP-controlled Senate.
