After the shocking and tragic death of GWAR lead guitarist Cory “Flattus Maximus” Smoot, the metal world did was it does best — unite. A memorial benefit show has been put together in GWAR’s hometown of Richmond, Va. All proceeds from the benefit will be given directly to the Smoot family.

On Nov. 3, only hours after a performance in Minneapolis, Minn., Cory Smoot was found dead in his bunk on GWAR’s tour bus as the band were crossing the Canadian boarder into Manitoba. Frontman Dave “Oderus Urungus” Brockie found the 34-year-old guitarist’s body, later regarding the discovery as “without a doubt the most horrible moment of my life.”

The Cory Smoot Memorial Benefit show will take place at Richmond’s Canal Club on Jan. 7, 2012. The benefit will showcase bands such as Mensrea, Cannabis Corpse and GWAR frontman side-project, The Dave Brockie Experience. The show will also serve as the official CD release party for The Cory Smoot Experiment’s ‘When Worlds Collide,’ a solo project that Smoot had completed shortly before his death.

In addition to ticket and album sales, a raffle will be held at the show with prizes donated by Schecter Guitars, Guitar Center, Municipal Waste and of course, GWAR. The Smoot family will receive 100% of the proceeds raised from the entire benefit.
