There's A National Park That Looks Like The Moon Surface In Idaho

One of the most unusual National Parks is close to Washington State. It's a bit of a drive from Tri-Cities Washington but so worth making a road trip to travel to a one-of-a-kind landscape that doesn't even look like Earth.

You Can Walk On A Moon-Like Surface In A National Park

I'm surprised that more TV and Movies don't film at this very unique National Park. I discovered the park many years ago as I was traveling to work at a radio station in Idaho Falls and that's when I first encountered "Craters Of The Moon".

Craters Of The Moon National Park is located in south-central Idaho between Boise and Yellowstone National Park. The massive lava field spanning 618 square miles is a sight to behold.

NASA Once Trained Astronauts On Idaho's "Craters Of The Moon"

The surface of lava fields emulates the surface of the moon making it a fascinating place to stop and explore on a road trip.

I stopped many years ago and walked a portion because it looked like a whole other world. My son loved it because it looked like an alien world to be explored.

As cool as Craters Of The Moon is, NASA soon discovered that once we'd been to the real Moon in 1969, the surfaces are very different.

The Moon's surface had been bombarded by meteorites while lava created the surface in Idaho.  NASA has used the Craters of The Moon on occasion to train Astronauts to look for "good" rocks.
