I-5 Both Directions Shut Down Near Tacoma After Fatal Semi-Truck Crash
Tragic Semi-Truck Crash Shuts Down I-5 in Both Directions Near Tacoma
A fatal semi-truck collision early this morning ( Tuesday April 29, 2025) has brought traffic to a standstill on I-5 in Tacoma, with both northbound and southbound lanes initially shut down near South 84th Street. The Washington State Patrol and the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) have been on the scene since the incident was first reported around 4:46 a.m.

According to Trooper John Dattilo, the crash involved a semi-truck that collided with a barrier and tipped over. Emergency crews quickly responded, and traffic was diverted to nearby off-ramps as firefighters worked on the scene and tried to save the truck driver.

Washington State Trooper Confirms Truck Driver Killed in Semi Collision
Sadly, Trooper Dattilo confirmed that the driver of the semi-truck died in the crash. The driver's identity has not been released, due to notification of next of kin. "I am saddened to announce that the truck driver has died as a result of this crash," Dattilo posted on X (formerly Twitter). "Expect an extended closure as we investigate."
I-5 Traffic: 6-Mile Backups and Lane Closures Continue
All morning, WSDOT officials have asked drivers to avoid the area if possible and use alternate routes, because of the long traffic backups cleanup is causing. A six-mile backup developed on northbound I-5 near Lakewood, while southbound I-5 had a one-mile delay. As of 12:00 p.m., three southbound lanes had reopened, with one lane still blocked while crews continue to repair the damaged barrier. Northbound lanes remained closed with no estimated time of reopening, but do say the repairs are close to being completed.
WSDOT says a full response team was required for this crash, including fire response, law enforcement investigation, vehicle removal, and highway cleanup. They ask drivers in the area for patience because of the large scale and severity of the incident.
If you can, postpone travel in the area or drive a different way until all lanes are fully reopened.
