I Finally Found a Place that Serves Grits in Yakima
Growing up in the Pacific Northwest I never grew up with grits. Sure, I saw them in a box at grocery stores and even tried them once (wasn't impressed as a kid) however grits seems to be a staple dish in the south that just never bothered to find their way up north.
Once I started to travel more and visited states in the south I tried proper grits again and, to my surprise, I found I loved them. When done properly, that is. If you take anything from a box it'll never be as good as someone making them fresh or 'the ol' fashioned way', as it was. From there, I never thought I'd see grits in Yakima. That is until I was surprised to see something on the menu at one of my favorite local restaurants.
Burgers, Fries tons of options for mac 'n' cheese and so many more pack the menu at Norm's in Yakima. We went there the other day and, there it was, looking right back at me. Grits. Right on the menu. Well, I knew what I was ordering when they came back by to take our order.
CREOLE SHRIMP & GRITS
Blackened shrimp, peppers & onions sautéed
w/ garlic & Cajun butter over cheesy grits
I'm glad I ordered it. Everything was done to perfection and the grits mixed well with the creole-style sauce and everything else in this dish. It was perfect for me and looking forward to ordering this again.
Next time you're at Norm's and don't know what else to order, maybe give this a shot. I'm glad I did.
