It's the end of an era in Spokane as an iconic "superstore" is closing its doors after 74 years.

If you've ever been to a White Elephant store, you know it pretty much has anything and everything you can think of. I remember making trips to the stores from my small town of Clarkston Washington as a kid and having eyes as big as saucers when I would walk into the store.

If you don't know what the White Elephant store is, think of it like our local Grigg's store but on steroids! It's a surplus store for toys, games, camping, fishing gear and so many other items. The store has such a reputation that they've been in business for close to 75 years.

You can find almost anything in the store and there are two locations in Spokane. One located on North Division and one on East Sprague. The stores made the bittersweet announcement on their Facebook over the weekend - here is the official statement from the owners:

This is a particularly difficult post to present to you, our most loyal customers and followers. Today we announce our retirement and the closure of The White Elephant stores.

The time has come for us to step out from behind the counter and enjoy the passions of family and recreation that this business was founded upon. It has been a tremendous run. The White Elephant has served our family well and provided us with a good and beautiful life.

We are forever indebted to our loyal customers, current and past employees, our cherished friends, and the entire Spokane community who have supported us with remarkable dedication for the past 74 years!

Both locations on North Division and East Sprague will be closed Monday, June 8th, to prepare for liquidation. The liquidation sale will begin Tuesday, June 9th. We will be open weekdays and Saturdays 9am to 6pm & Sundays 11am to 5pm.

THANK YOU SPOKANE!

I know I'm going to miss the stores but what an amazing legacy the store has and am sure it will always be fondly remembered. You can check out more details on the White Elephant closure here.
