Could we actually be witnessing the death of the electric guitar?

This question was legitimately posed recently by Fred Jacobs of Jacobs Media. Jacobs is oft considered the creator of the Classic Rock radio format.

In a piece he published on July 11, he cited the trend in electronic music, the declaration of bankruptcy of legendary Gibson guitars, Guitar Center's impending bankruptcy filing as well as six-string titans like Eric Clapton downsizing his epic personal collection of axes. Even Metallica's Kirk Hammett is quoted in the piece admitting that the electric guitar may just, simply, be falling out of fashion.

For those that grew-up on rock 'n' roll, it's chilling to even think about.
