Compassionate Cannabis: New Study Finds Regular Marijuana Boosts Empathy
Marijuana/ Cannabis has been legal in WA State since Nov. of 2012. What kind of studies have come about? Surely there have been some conducted!
A study was done in the United Nations that showed 3.9% of the Global population aged 15-65 has used cannabis with 9.9% corresponded to daily or near daily use. Source
"It has been reported that cannabis consumption affects the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC), a structure with a central role in mediating the empathic response." Source
So, does this mean we have a new way to boost Empathy?
Quite possibly! If you go by the studies shown above!
" In this study, we compared psychometric scores of empathy subscales, between a group of regular cannabis users (85, users) and a group of non-consumers (51, controls). We found that users have a greater Emotional Comprehension, a cognitive empathy trait involving the understanding of the “other” emotional state." - Source
While further research is needed to fully back this. Other factors could be contributed.
What does this mean for Cannabis users?
Well, you may be more empathetic compared to your non-cannabis user friends.
What is Empathy?
"the action of understanding, being aware of, being sensitive to, and vicariously experiencing the feelings, thoughts, and experience of another" - Source
In other words, you have the ability to care for others, even if you aren't in their shoes to experience their experiences.
The Legal Age to consume Cannabis in Washington State is 21.
The significance of this study is really that fact that Cannabis is always linked to negative behavioral and mental health. This study however finds that regular use of cannabis has shown an increase of understanding in others.
