Dec. 28 marks the second anniversary of the death of Avenged Sevenfold drummer The Rev. The stickman, born James Sullivan, died at the age of 28, due to an accidental overdose of a mixture of prescription drugs. An enlarged heart was suggested as another thing that could have factored into the kit minder’s tragic and untimely death.

In memoriam, Revolver has polled a series of fellow rockers, drummers and frontmen alike, regarding their fond memories of or their relationships with The Rev.

Hellyeah and Pantera stickman Vinnie Paul weighed in, saying, “His music was very challenging and dangerous, but the Rev was always just a down-to-earth guy that was very humble, with no ego. He always treated me with the ultimate respect and I always enjoyed his presence. He was great.”

Shinedown drummer Barry Kerch stated that The Rev was “a true inspiration to all drummers out there. I only knew him personally for a short time, but his legacy will live forever. I personally will miss him dearly and so will the whole drumming community.”

Buckcherry stickman Xavier Muriel enthused about his time on the road with The Rev, saying, “The music world lost a great person and musician with the passing of Jimmy ‘The Rev’ Sullivan. Jimmy brought a stylistic flare to his performance which helped take the band to a very high level at such a young age. I had the honor of touring with him and found the Rev to be a very warm and caring individual and one hell of a drummer.”

Bullet for My Valentine vocalist Matt Tuck shared details of his personal relationship with the late skinsman, sharing, “Jimmy had a huge amount of love for everyone he met. When we’d go out for drinks, he would always grab you and hug you and kiss you and tell you how much he loved you. Jimmy had a huge passion for living life for however long he was going to be on this earth. It was cut dramatically short, but for the amount of time he was here, rest assured, he had a great time.”

Papa Roach singer Jacoby Shaddix also espoused the drummer’s personal way of dealing with fans, declaring, “Not only was he a great and innovative drummer/song writer, he was a leader who truly cared about his band his fans and all his friends. I admire that about him.”
