Live in Europe: Catching Up With Metallica’s Recently Released Live Videos
Metallica have officially wrapped up their summer tour across Europe and they're gearing up for their final three shows of the year, first in Chicago then Buffalo and Pittsburgh. As fans debate and wonder what 2023 and beyond may have in store for the band, we figured now is as good a time as any to look back on some of the most recent official live videos Metallica have released from their Europen trek.
You can find several of their videos here, but below you'll see the latest five from their shows in Bilbao and Madrid, Spain, and Lisbon, Portugal.
First up is the St. Anger track, "Dirty Window."
"Dirty Window" was first premiered onstage near the end of 2003 and was largely played throughout 2004. For some reason, Metallica shelved it until their 30th anniversary shows in San Francisco in 2011 and then they kept it in the dark for another 10 years when they pulled it out for one of their 40th anniversary gigs (again, in San Fran). Since then, it's found new life in their '22 setlists and after you check out the video below—shot in Bilbao on July 3—you'll see and hear why.

The next video Metallica released is the fan-favorite and Garage Inc. single, "Whiskey in the Jar," shot in Madrid on July 6. While it's a song every fan knows front-to-back, it's not a song that's received a lot of love from the stage. Though they first played it live on Nov. 17, 1998, in Toronto, they've only played it 83 times since.
This particular performance was at the Mad Cool Festival, and "Whiskey in the Jar" was sandwiched between "Sad But True" and "For Whom the Bell Tolls."

The third live Metallica video in this recap keeps fans in Madrid for the song that followed "Whiskey in the Jar," Ride the Lightning's "For Whom the Bell Tolls." Unlike the previous two songs, this is one of Metallica's most-performed tracks in the live setting. Since 1984, they've jammed it more than 1,500 times, and as you can see in the performance below, they're still having a blast playing it for their screaming fans.

From Madrid we move to Lisbon to NOS Alive at Passeio Marítimo de Algés on July 8. "Fade to Black" has become a regular staple in Metallica's 2022 sets, carrying with it a lot of emotional weight not just because of the content of the song, but for the personal connection James Hetfield seems to have with it at every show.

The final video Metallica have released (as of the writing of this recap) is the classic Kill 'Em All thrasher, "Whiplash." This track has served as the show opener for nearly every single Metallica concert this year. After 2022, it's going to be hard to imagine any better song to open a 'Tallica show with.

We're guessing Metallica will keep releasing live videos for the rest of the year, maybe pulling out some more performances from their South American dates as well as their European run. And of course, we expect to see some killer pro-shot videos from Lollapalooza and their final two stadium dates in August; stay tuned and we'll make sure to keep you up-to-date.
You can follow along with the remainder of their 2022 tour here.
