Granted, almost every single movie based on a video game has been terrible, and that includes at least a couple of the Resident Evil movies. But we’re entering a new era in Hollywood; one where video games aren’t turned into movies. They’re turned into television shows. What could go wrong?

Okay, so a lot could go wrong, but we’re still excited about a lot of these shows, including The Last of Us on HBO, Halo on Paramount+, and Resident Evil on Netflix. The latter show has been in the works since at least the summer of 2020, when Netflix first announced development of a live-action TV adaptation of the long-running horror game series. Today, they revealed that their Resident Evil will debut later this summer, and unveiled the plot synopsis for the show:

Year 2036 – 14 years after a deadly virus caused a global apocalypse, Jade Wesker fights for survival in a world overrun by the blood-thirsty infected and insane creatures. In this absolute carnage, Jade is haunted by her past in New Raccoon City, by her father’s chilling connections to the Umbrella Corporation but mostly by what happened to her sister, Billie.

The showrunner on the series is Andrew Dabb, who previously worked on Supernatural, and the cast includes Lance Reddick as Albert Wesker, one of the key villains from the Resident Evil games, along with Ella Balinska, Tamara Smart, Siena Agudong, Adeline Rudolph, and Pola Nunez.

Netflix also showed off three posters for the show, which feature all the classic Resident Evil trademarks: Blood, the Umbrella Corporation, and science experiments gone awry.

Resident Evil premieres on Netflix on July 14.
