The heavy metal legend Ronnie James Dio, best known for his work with Black Sabbath, Rainbow, and his own band Dio, died due to complications with stomach cancer one year ago today. He was 67.

Dio was known throughout the world as one of the most influential vocalists in heavy metal history. He was was recording and touring with the Sabbath spinoff band Heaven & Hell just before he was diagnosed with stomach cancer in late 2009 and underwent chemotherapy. Dio made his final public appearance in April 2010 at Revolver Golden Gods Awards in LA.
