Jerod Shelby, the founder of Shelby Supercars (SSC) based in the Tri Cities, made a name for himself with the release of the Ultimate Aero. On September 13th 2007 the SSC Ultimate Aero became the World's Fastest Production Car with a top speed of 256 mph as verified by Guinness World Records.

4 years later, the next evolution in the SSC name is being sold. The Tuatara, pronounced Twu-tar-ah, made a splash at the Dubai International Motor Show this week where the company reportedly booked 10 sales for its latest model at a price of $1.3 million dollars each.

The futuristic looking two seater, which will begin production next year, is equipped with a 1350 hp twin-turbocharged 6.6-liter V8 engine. The Tuatara is apart of a very exclusive list of million-dollar hypercars that also includes the 1200 hp Bugatti Veyron Super Sport and 1250 hp Hennessey Performance Venom GT.

With the Tuatara, SSC could reclaim their title as World's Fastest Production Car. That mark once held by the SSC Ultimate Aero, was broken by the Veyron on a test track in German last year with a top speed of 268. When SSC set the record in 2007, it wasn't on a track, but a public stretch of highway 221 between Prosser and Patterson.

With $13 million dollars of work on the table for SSC, it may be awhile before they attempt to set the world record, but with the Tuatara it is definitely a possibility.
