The report released last week says that long term effects of spanking can include aggression, brain changes, substance abuse and suicidal behavior in adulthood.
The council says taking away favorite toys and games can be a more effective way to change behavior.
There is new research showing that parents are spanking their children less hence an update to the recommendations that have been in place since 1998.
