Yesterday (Sept. 27) marked the 26th anniversary of Metallica bassist Cliff Burton's shocking death, prompting an outpouring of memories from fans -- as well as a tribute from his surviving bandmates.

26 years ago, while traveling through Sweden, Metallica's tour bus tipped over after the driver lost control due to icy roads. Band members and onlookers at the scene have given different accounts as to whether 24 year old bassist Cliff Burton died when he was thrown out of the window or during failed rescue attempts, but either way, tragically, Burton died at the scene.
