The Washington State Department of Transportation has put together an online presentation that runs from now until October 13th, detailing a couple of major improvements at a pair of busy intersections in Walla Walla.

These are design visualization sketches of what the improvements are going to look like:

Drivers experiencing heavy congestion due to increased traffic volumes at the intersection of SR 125 and Plaza Way can expect a spiral roundabout to be constructed beginning in the Spring of 2021. A spiral roundabout uses a combination of single-lane and multi-lane approaches and exits to efficiently move traffic through the intersection.

The intersection at Plaza Way and W. Tietan Street also has traffic flow problems, so to reduce the risk of collisions and increase safety, Plaza Way will be reconstructed and re-striped with a two-way-left-turn from W. Tietan Street to Village Way to allow easier access into neighboring businesses.

In 2022, additional sidewalk improvements on the west side of SR 125 and S. 9th Avenue will be built between the railroad and the existing sidewalk north of Orchard Street. This work also includes a realignment of the existing path across the railroad on the east side of S. 9th Avenue.

Construction is scheduled to begin in the Spring of 2021 with a completion date approximately six months after commencement. Construction crews will do the majority of their work at night in order to reduce impacts to adjacent businesses and utilize detours to reduce impacts to the overall traveling public.
