Webb Simpson Wins the 2012 US Open
Webb Simpson shot a final round of 68 to win the US Open golf championship on Sunday at the Lake Course at the Olympic Club in San Francisco. Simpson bested Graeme McDowell, who failed to force a playoff after missing a 25-foot birdie putt on the 18th hole.
The victory gave Simpson, 26, his first major championship of his career. His 1-over 281, was enough to beat former US Open champions McDowell and Jim Furyk, who entered Sunday tied for the lead. Furyk bogeyed two of his last three holes, while McDowell missed the birdie on the 18th.
Three-time winner Tiger Woods shot 75 and 73 on Saturday and Sunday respectively to fall far out of contention. Woods finished 7 over, tied for 21st.
Simpson was at +5 after the first two holes on Sunday. He rallied to become the ninth consecutive first-time major winner of the US Open and captured the $1.44 million purse. It was Simpson’s third career win on the PGA Tour.
