The name first came to be in 2002 when high school principal Deborah Morse suspended 18-year-old Joseph Frederick after he displayed a banner reading "BONG HiTS 4 JESUS" across the street from the school during the 2002 Olympic Torch Relay. Frederick sued, claiming his constitutional rights to free speech were violated.

Bong Hits For Jesus the band now using the name is based out of the South Philly/New Jersey area. Stephen Rose has been involved in songwriting, acting, and the performing arts since the age of 5. Shawn Betz is the bassist and is studying to be a lemur tamer. After working with various drummers, C.J. Bracale has found a home as the band's full-time drummer and Matt Boyle has recently joined the band on lead guitar.
