While the 2013 Country Music Awards may be the last place rock fans would expect to see Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl, that’s exactly where he showed up with his drum kit last night (Nov. 6).

Grohl made a guest appearance playing drums for the Zac Brown Band during their award show performance of a brand new song titled ‘Day of the Dead.’ Their high energy jam, seen in the video above, shows Grohl immersed in the tune, pulverizing the drums for the blues infused number and also offers up some idea about what the future may hold for the sound of the Zac Brown Band.

Zac Brown is a self-professed, long time Grohl fan, once telling the Country Vibe, “I want to work with Dave Grohl.” He then added on to that, sharing, “Dave Grohl is one of our musical heroes as a band and he said that he would be interested in doing that too.”

The CMA performance is seemingly just the beginning of the collaboration between the former Nirvana drummer and the Zac Brown Band though. Grohl has reportedly signed on to produce the country superstar’s next disc which could likely include the new track introduced last night.
