According to the Special Investigations Unit handling the fatal shooting of a Pasco suspect, we now know that the two persons being sought by police had fired at officers.

Commander Randy Maynard of the Kennewick Police Department is the leader of the investigation into the fatal shooting of a suspect Sunday afternoon.

Maynard told local media that around 2:37PM Pasco officers were following up on leads from an earlier home invasion that occurred between 9-10AM Sunday.  At a home in the 1900 block of East Lewis, a man and woman were shot by two suspects wearing bandannas who broke in, then fled. After carjacking a vehicle, the two suspects were reportedly located at a home at 807 North 12th.

Maynard said as the officers were waiting for additional resources to surround and contain the home, two suspects, identified as Juan and Miguel Montalvo, ran from the side of the home and towards an alley by the home. As they did so, they were armed and began firing shots in the "direction of" officers. Two Pasco officers responded with what Maynard called was a "deadly force response" both suspects were hit. No officers were hit.

One of the suspects, Juan Montalvo, was not able to be saved at the scene. Miguel was treated at the scene and then taken to a nearby hospital for surgery. He was cleared later Sunday night and was booked on a warrant for murder. It is believed that charge stems from a fatal shooting that took place at that East Lewis home on April 29.

Both Juan and Miguel were the subject of arrest warrants in the fatal shooting of 29-year-old Louis Contreras.

The SIU team is made up of area police officers from Benton, Franklin and Walla Walla Counties, and will only investigate this shooting from the time gunfire began moving forward. Pasco investigators will continue to work on the April homicide and the home invasion from earlier in the day.

The Pasco Police Chief requested the SIU due to it being an officer involved shooting.
