WHEN DID RECREATIONAL WEED BECOME LEGAL IN WASHINGTON?

Recreational cannabis became legal in Washington back in 2012. Mary Jane users have been happily puffing away for the past 11 years whilst shop owners have been coming up with some entertaining cannabis store names.

Recently in Washington, there has been some talk about giving equal access to own a cannabis shop in the state. Initially, people who met strict criteria were allowed to apply for a pot shop business license. These iron-fisted rules made way for unequal access to those in underrepresented community groups including those who were formerly convicted for small pot possession charges.

The Washington State Legislature recently approved HB 1614 with a bipartisan 7-4 vote in the House Regulated Substances and Gaming Committee to allow residents over age 21 to grow their own small stash of cannabis at home. The bill next goes back to the WA State House Rules Committee for a second reading and once reviewed and passed, it will then move on to a vote in the WA State House Appropriations Committee. Sponsors of the bill include Representatives Kloba, Ormsby, Doglio, Goodman, Wylie, Fosse, Gregerson, Morgan, and Reed.
