Pasco Fire officials say the damage is extensive at the facility and will get costly.

RAPIDLY SPREADING FIRE DAMAGES PASCO STORAGE FACILITY

Pasco Fire Public Information Officer (PIO) Ben Shearer said around 4:26 PM Thursday the call came in from the Security Mini Storage Facility on Hopkins, just off of 28th in Pasco, just south of Lewis St. It's the one between the Shopping Spot store and the Bruce Lee Funeral Home.

Smoke was seen boiling up into the darkening sky, and upon arrival units from Pasco found one unit completely engulfed. Fire units from Kennewick and Richland joined in the efforts, and Ben Franklin Transit brought in a bus to help firefighters shift in and out to get warm.

WHY WAS FIRE SO DIFFICULT TO PUT OUT?

Shearer said on video that the fire spread from unit to unit by way of the rafters and roof system. While each unit is separated by walls, the fire climbed into the rafters and 'ran' down the building.

Firefighters had to go into each unit and make sure it was extinguished, officials say at least 50-55 units sustained some sort of fire, water or smoke damage. The cost of the fire to the facility is not yet known, but expected to be high as well as the damage to all the customers' items in their sheds.

The cause of the fire is not yet known. A report from KEPR-TV said fire officials have been able to contact the owner of the unit where the blaze began and confirmed there were no toxic or explosive materials in that shed.

But the specific cause of the fire has yet to be determined.
