Russell Wilson Traded to the Denver Broncos: Get Used to Disappointment

I just got off the phone with my older brother, a lifelong Seahawks fan. He said he doesn't plan on crying but I'm not 100 percent sure I believe him. I just couldn't believe he heard the news from me first.

The first thing my brother asked me was, "what did we get back for him?" I can't help but wonder if it even matters. Wilson was the only thing keeping that team glued together and seaworthy but even he couldn't work that magic last season. Wilson, a 2012 third-round draft pick, is the greatest quarterback in team history. He's a Super Bowl champion, a nine-time Pro Bowler, and a second-team All-Pro. His 292 touchdown passes are first in team history, as are his 3,079 completions and 37,059 passing yards. His improvisational play masked deadly flaws in the team's roster and scheme, and his Seahawks teams limped into the playoffs in recent years. But it was his run from 2013 to 2020 was legendary. In ten seasons, Wilson was a certified winner, posting a 104-53-1 record with the Seahawks.

What did the Seahawks get back in the Russell Wilson trade?

While the trade has yet to be finalized, reports indicate Seattle is receiving a plethora of draft picks, including two first-rounders and two second-round picks. With a subpar quarterback draft class, the Seahawks could try to pick someone up in free agency or trade and look toward future drafts with their newfound capital. Who knows, maybe they can offload Jamal Adams and try to recoup at least one first-round draft pick.

Update: According to Ian Rapaport, the Seahawks are also receiving Shelby Harris, Noah Fant and quarterback Drew Lock.

What should Seahawks fans do now?

I'm just going to come out and say it: unless Seattle finds their next franchise quarterback in the next two years, the basement will be their home. Drew Lock can dance but he can’t take the Seahawks back to the big dance. He’s not that guy, like at all. The Rams, Cardinals, and possibly 49ers will run rampant in the NFC West. So, if you have patience and a good liver, drink every football Sunday and get used to numbness. Get used to more seasons like 2021 because there will be a few more before the Seahawks get back to being competitive. You can start looking at mock drafts as early as midseason and hope Pete Carroll and John Schnieder make the right decisions.
