Hey Slackers: This Ain’t the Dump! It’s a Recycle Drop-Box…

What is it that people don't get about recycling? I love living in a community where recycling locations are provided to us. I reside in the City of Richland, where there are 6 drop-box locations for residents to leave recyclable materials such as:

cardboard, newspaper, tin, aluminum, glass, plastic beverage containers and scrap paper, like phone books, pressboard boxes, and junk mail.

These drop-box locations are meant for people to drop off materials meant for recycling, NOT TRASH. I saw a post a few weeks ago on social media at this same drop-box location. I often see trash that has been left. Or, are people leaving it doing so, thinking that others may want it? There appear to be child car seats, a table-top, and a griddle in a box. (I didn't look to see what was in the boxes.)

I Googled the City of Richland Dump and was forwarded to the Horn Rapids Landfill page.

In addition to garbage and yard waste, the following materials are accepted at the Horn Rapids Landfill:

• used motor oil (5 gallon limit per visit)
• antifreeze
• cooking oil
• automotive batteries
• rechargeable batteries
• propane tanks and canisters

Only because I have a laptop to get rid of, I also looked up where I can dispose of this safely. Here's what another search provided:

There are 2 centers in the Tri-Cities where you can dispose of E-Waste, including:

• Computers
• CPU (Towers)
• Laptops
• Computer Monitors
• Televisions
• DVD Players
• E Readers

Hours are Monday through Friday from 8 am till 4 pm and from 8 am till 12 pm on Saturday.

When dropping off your recyclables, please do your research. Some items are not acceptable.
