WSDOT Crews Getting Ready with Winter Weather Around the Corner
You can feel the chill in the air, and the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) is feeling the same and getting into winter mode.

A new WSDOT release states that nearly 1,500 maintenance workers from Forks to Davenport have been training, stocking sheds with salt, and inspecting more than 500 snowplows to prepare for the upcoming season.
Washington Department of Transportation Invokes “Swarm to the Storm” Strategy
When heavy snow hits, crews will “swarm to the storm,” shifting plows and staff to the hardest-hit areas based on priority routes. WSDOT wants to remind everyone that it takes cooperation from both work crews and the driving public to keep mountain passes and state highways open all winter.
WSDOT prepares the roads, and they are asking drivers to prepare their vehicles by checking tires, carrying chains, and making sure they have an emergency kit before hitting snowy roads.
Mountain Pass Snow Closures, Usually Caused by Unprepared Drivers
Most pass closures are not just because of weather, but are caused by drivers going too fast or not having proper traction gear for their vehicle.
Remember that traction tires must have the mountain/snowflake symbol and at least 1/8-inch tread to comply with the law. Chains are required when posted, even if your vehicle has studded tires (which are legal only from Nov. 1 through March 31).

Ignoring chain requirements can cost you a hefty $500 fine and put others at risk at the same time. Stay safe, plan ahead, and give snowplows room to work while they are out there keeping the rest of us moving.
