If you spend any time on social media, there is no doubt you've come across at least one friend who has shared some type of AI artwork—that is, a piece of art generated by artificial intelligence.

If you're like us, when you see these graphics, one question pops into your mind: WTF is AI art?

According to Lauren Duplessis, writing for Domestika, AI art is:

...artwork (visual, audio, or otherwise) generated by a machine learning process—that is, a machine has "learned" some information, and used it to generate a new image. Humans may have collected the data, or written instructions for the machine to use, but the process of creation is left to the machine.

Now, as fans of music created by human beings, we recognize the danger of celebrating art created by machines and data. That being said, if you've seen most of the AI art out there, you know it won't likely be featured in museums any day soon.

Because everyone seems to be having so much fun with this trend, we figured we'd join the party, too. We might have spent a little too much time with the AI studio on NightCafe, but it was worth it.

We fed the machine several different Metallica-related text prompts to see what it could come up with and some of the results are awesome.

Others are hilarious.

And a few will probably give you nightmares.

Check out the gallery below to see some of our favorite Metallica-themed AI art.

AI Generated Art: Metallica Edition

Using simple text prompts like "James Hetfield" or "Kirk Hammett Guitar," the robots have created some bizarre, and kind of cool, AI art. In the gallery below, you'll see the artificial intelligence creations; underneath each graphic is the text prompt that led to the art.
