After 15-Years, Tri-City Water Follies Director is Retiring
Kathy Powell has announced that she's stepping down after 15-years of service to the Tri-City Water Follies. Powell began as a volunteer with the community event. In 2007 she was approached to take over as director.
The summer weekend of boat races brings thousands of visitors to the Tri-Cities for hydroplane races on the Columbia River.
the Water Follies organization has had it's share of struggles. In 2007, Powell had full support of volunteers and past presidents. The management structure was re-organized and has since become a profitable organization.
Powell is planning to step aside in February, 2022. She'll continue to assist the organization and new director for next year's races. According to a report from the Tri-City Herald:
It’s been an honor and privilege to serve as the event director for the past 15 years. I lost my dad to cancer last spring and I’m turning 60 in January. I’m ready for a summer off to enjoy my pool and explore a lot of campgrounds in the region.
