On this date in 1777, the Continental Congress replaced the British symbols of the Grand Union flag with a new design that would become the flag of the United States of America.

Although today is not an official federal holiday, Flag Day still holds importance as a time when Americans reflect on the foundations of our nation’s freedom. We salute the American flag every year on June 14 to commemorate the adoption 'Old Glory'.
