Can you rename a mountain?

The Puyallup Tribe of Indians has launched an effort to do just that. The tribe wants to rename Mount Rainier back to the original name of “Mount Taquoma.” It's a combination of Mount Tahoma and Mount Tacoma.

The tribe believes they would be correcting a historical wrong.

Mount Rainier (/reɪˈnɪər/), also known as Tahoma or Tacoma, is a large active stratovolcano in the Cascade Range of the Pacific Northwest, located in Mount Rainier National Park about 59 miles (95 km) south-southeast of Seattle.^[4] With a summit elevation of 14,411 ft (4,392 m),^[5][6] it is the highest mountain in the U.S. state of Washington and the Cascade Range, the most topographically prominent mountain in the contiguous United States,^[7] and the tallest in the Cascade Volcanic Arc.

On March 2, 1899, President William McKinley signed a bill passed by Congress authorizing the creation of Mount Rainier National Park, the nation's fifth national park.^[11] It was the first national park created from a national forest.^[

Mount Rainier is the tallest mountain in the Evergreen State. According to the National Park Service, it's an active volcano.

The tribe is working with other tribes to make the change happen. Renaming the site would have to be approved by the U.S. Board of Geographical Names and Congress.
