Washington State Ranked 3rd in Best State for Innovation

Washington state is a great place to live for a lot of reasons. If you're into the whole STEM idea you're in a great place as Washington state was just ranked 3rd place for best states for innovation.

WalletHub took into account 22 deciding factors, compared to Washington DC, to see where they land and Washington state ranked extremely high compared to other states.

Washington DC came in first place with Massachusettes in 2nd place.

Washington state is also great when separate factors are broken down including:

1st place for projected STEM-job demand by 2030
1st place for research and development spending per capita
2nd place for share of STEM professionals
7th place for venture-capital funding per capita
11th place for share of technology companies

If you're a STEM professional or really into science and technologies it'd be rough to live in a place like Mississippi, Louisiana and North Dakota as those are the last 3 places for this list. Not to say they're bad places however, when it comes to innovations for this list, they seem to keep doing things the old fashioned way. Nothing wrong with that, I suppose. If the old fashioned way has worked so long for so many of these states I guess it's not up to us to have them catch up. Let them be. They're fine.

In the meantime, if you're in Washington state and are hoping to get into the STEM field for innovation and design and everything else, when it comes to looking how to further your career you needn't look further than our own backyard.

The list starts with Hurricane Sally, which caused $7.3 billion in damages in 2020, and ends with a devastating 2005 hurricane that caused $170 billion in damage and killed at least 1,833 people. To find out more about how has the price of gas changed throughout the years, Stacker ran the numbers on the cost of a gallon of gasoline for each of the last 84 years. Using data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (released in April 2020), we analyzed the average price for a gallon of unleaded regular gasoline from 1976 to 2020 along with the Consumer Price Index (CPI) for unleaded regular gasoline from 1937 to 1976, including the absolute and inflation-adjusted prices for each year.

To find out, Stacker consulted data from WalletHub, released June 17, 2020, that compares U.S. beach towns. The cities ranged in population from 10,000 to 150,000, but they had to have at least one local beach listed on TripAdvisor. Read the full methodology here. Stacker used data from the 2020 County Health Rankings to rank every state's average life expectancy from lowest to highest. The 2020 County Health Rankings values were calculated using mortality counts from the 2016-2018 National Center for Health Statistics. The U.S. Census 2019 American Community Survey and America's Health Rankings Senior Report 2019 data were also used to provide demographics on the senior population of each state and the state's rank on senior health care, respectively.

Using March 2019 data from the Social Security Administration, Stacker compiled a list of the most popular names in each of the 50 states and Washington D.C., according to their 2018 SSA rankings. The top five boy names and top five girl names are listed for each state, as well as the number of babies born in 2018 with that name. Historically common names like Michael only made the top five in three states, while the less common name Harper ranks in the top five for 22 states.
