Walla Walla Schools Cleared to Resume Sports
The Walla Walla School District released a statement Thursday, which included the following athletic announcement:
"Following nearly a one-year hiatus, Walla Walla High School coaches and athletes have been given the green light to resume competition this month following the announcement the South Central region advanced to Phase 2 of the state’s Roadmap to Recovery. The Washington Interscholastic Activities Association (WIAA) Season One for high school sports includes football, slowpitch softball, cross country, girls soccer and volleyball. A full slate of games is scheduled to begin the week of February 22. "
The District has been accelerating return to class, hybrid, for middle and high school students. While not having an enormous population, some say the COVID-19 standards for Walla Walla County were set too high.
The only fans allowed will be home fans, two tickets per rostered athlete will be allocated for freshman and JV football, volleyball, slowpitch softball, and soccer. For varsity football seniors and senior dance, each will receive two tickets for each game. No other participants will be allowed besides game day personnel and these player tickets.
Nonetheless, the return to athletics will be welcome for many students. The District says the Blue Devil Northwest program will help them provide streaming to watch many of the athletic contests online.
